Historical Letters: A Lost War Letter

The postmaster in Newaygo, Michigan recently received an envelope which she carelessly tore into as though it were ordinary mail. If only she had known what was in her hand. With a postmark of April 23, 2015 she had no indication that she held something remarkable. Yet, in 1863, the envelope's contents were ordinary mail.
